Synopsis

"Aryana is a sophomore at Woodrow Wilson, a small 6–12 charter in what U.S. News & World Report calls “the worst city to live in in the U.S.” Each morning, she gets herself up, wakes her 7th grade brother and kindergarten sister, makes breakfast, and gets them on the bus. She doesn’t wake her mom, who’s been unraveling since Aryana’s older brother was killed in a club shooting six months ago. Her biggest personal conflict is with her boyfriend D’Avante’s strict mother, who thinks Aryana is a bad influence. Aryana often shows up with split lips and black eyes—fuel for the assumption she’s fighting in the streets. When the principal announces the state will close Wilson in January, everything shifts. Aryana and her four closest friends reel. Beans, D’Avante’s best friend, reacts with fury: “Even the shit we don’t want they got to take from us.” Most Wilson students, including Aryana, get sent to the massive neighboring high school—one of the worst in the state, but the only one with space. “Space” turns out to mean “a seat on a leaking radiator,” and the Wilson kids aren’t exactly welcomed by the overcrowded students or the burned-out faculty.
